BA (Hons) Film Studies with Film Production, 2016

Life through a lens

Since graduating, aspiring cameraman Matthew Rainford has been working as a freelance camera operator and editor to develop his skills and boost his CV.

Matthew has worked on Showcase, a bi-weekly magazine show for Bay TV, produced training videos for Starbucks and, most recently, worked on the music video for radio presenter and television comedian Charlie Hale’s song Muhammad Ali’s Dream (aka Fighting for Equality), which was featured on Good Morning Britain and in the Manchester Evening News. Matthew’s freelancing is already opening doors for him and he now has a number of television projects in the pipeline.

“The course didn’t just teach me how to make a film, but taught me the importance of networking. It was actually the actor in my final piece of coursework that gave me my first steps into freelancing. Freelancing is great for adding projects to your CV and showreel, but be prepared to give your time for free to start with. The experience you gain is so worth it.”
