Welcome to the Department of Media’s Festival in a Day!


 The aim of our Festival in a Day is to bring together a range of speakers from across the creative industries. It gives you the opportunity to listen to inspiring speakers, and celebrate the success of our graduates. You can also network with the speakers and get some tips on how to make it in the creative industries when you graduate.

How To Produce Flagship TV Drama
Key Note speaker: Juliet Charlesworth

Juliet Charlesworth whose credits include executive producing the Bafta award winning Happy Valley, Clocking Off, Scott And Bailey and Hollyoaks will talk to students about her career and offer tips on how to break into TV drama.

The talk will be followed by Q&A from the audience.

So You want To Be A Feature Film Line Producer?
Guest Speaker Michelle Billington

Michelle is an experienced film Line producer whose credits include the directorial debut feature from David Morrissey, Don’t Worry About Me.  She is also founder of Foot in The Door productions a Liverpool not for profit Film Production company. Michelle will talk about how she is helping create a film industry in Merseyside and also offer tips on how to get established stars to act in your productions.

The talk will be followed by Q&A from the audience.

Secrets to breaking into the Film & TV Industries

Be inspired by EHU Media Graduates who have carved out amazing careers in the worlds of Film, television, and animation. These include:

  • Lisa Clark: Lisa graduated from TVPM in 2012 and has worked on everything from Match of The Day to Rip off Britain. Currently Lisa works on CBBC’s Newsround as a Production Coordinator.
  • Samantha Steele: Samantha only graduated in 2017 but has already worked at entry level for Sky and the BBC, and is now a Digital Content Producer at Jacobs.
  • Laurence Carr: Laurence graduated in 2015 and went on to do an MA in Silent Film at the University of Leeds. As well as entry level roles on shows such as Happy Valley, Laurence works as a film critic at FACT.
  • Kyle Ogden: Kyle graduated in 2008 and has worked as an editor at LA Productions and the BBC where he worked on Jimmy McGovern’s prime time BBC One drama Broken, and the soon be released Our Girl.

An opportunity to network with many of the afternoons speakers, enjoy refreshments and great music in Foyer. Dance around those business cards and make sure you leave with some contacts as well as some festival food!

The Creative Juice Bar – Short Taster Sessions with Industry Professionals

11.45 – 12.45pm The Beginners Guide to Film Festivals – in CE202

Elizabeth Costello founder of Leigh Film Festival, will share her experiences of setting up a North West screen event. Students will also be offered guidance on how to make their film stand out to selection panels.

11.45 – 12.45pm How to get your first job in Broadcasting – in CE203

This jam-packed one hour workshop, run by Development Producer Rachel Boyd, will offer students invaluable insights about how to get that all important first job in television. Rachel is co-founder of Manchester based indie Crocodile Media whose broadcast clients include the BBC, Channel 4 and Sky. Rachel’s own CV includes blue-chip shows like University Challenge and Tonight with Trevor MacDonald. With her help, yours could soon be equally impressive.
