These collections provide instant access to scholarly research, journal articles and book reviews. They may be accessed 24/7 and each collection has its own help and guidance on the home page.
Journal & Database Collections
- Academic Search Premier covers a wide range of subjects including media.
- Animation is an international, peer-reviewed journal brings together research in film and media studies, architecture, art and design, visual culture and creative practice.
- Box of Broadcasts is an on demand TV and radio service for education. The academically-focused system enables you to record programmes from over 65 free-to-air channels, and search an extensive archive. Box of Broadcasts is intuitive and easy to use, so you may find you can start straight away. However, if you need a bit of help, take a look at the video tutorials.
- Communication and Mass Media contains full text articles from over 500 journals. There is also an integrated communication thesaurus to help with related terms.
- Film and Television Literature Index covers the entire spectrum of film and television theory, preservation and restoration, writing, production, cinematography, technical aspects and reviews.
- JSTOR provides access to the highest-quality academic journals, books, and primary sources. The collections include JSTOR Arts and Sciences I, II, III and VII.
- Oxford Academic is a collection of journals published by Oxford University Press that can be used to find journal articles for media.
- Passport is an essential resource for students of advertising and marketing. It is a one-stop source to find statistics, market reports, company profiles and information for country, market, consumer and lifestyle profiling.
- Taylor & Francis Online is a large collection of multidisciplinary journals covering subjects such as communication studies, media and film studies and social sciences.
- WARC contains thousands of case studies that reveal the marketing, advertising and media campaign strategies of leading brands.
- Wiley Online Library is a collection of full text journals that can be used to find journal articles for media.
Newspapers can be a useful way of keeping up to date with current affairs or recent events. Daily newspapers can be found in Catalyst, in the area underneath the main staircase. The last 30 days’ worth are kept on the second floor in the Journals collection. Newspaper archives usually contain issues which are less recent and which are useful for finding articles of a more historical interest.
- Daily Mail Historical Archive 1896-2004 contains news stories and images that capture 20th century culture and society. Offers full page and article images with searchable full text back to the first issue. Useful for historical research.
- Guardian and Observer Digital Archive contains every issue of The Guardian from 1821 to 2003 and of The Observer between 1791 and 2003. You can search by keyword or by keyword and date; each story is an exact reproduction of the original.
- Infotrac Newsstand contains articles from over 2300 newspapers from around the world. These include major British newspapers, as well as US and Australian titles. It also has thousands of images, radio and TV broadcasts and transcripts.
- LexisNexis contains over 650 regional and national UK newspapers from 1982 to the present. It is possible to limit your search to either national or regional titles, or you can search the whole of the newspaper database.
- Times Digital Archive contains every issue of The Times from 1785 to 1985. You can search by keyword or for a particular issue and each story appears as it looks in the original copy of the newspaper.
- The Advertising Association promotes the role, rights and responsibilities of advertising and its impact on individuals, society and the economy.
- The Advertising Standards Authority is the UK’s independent regulator of advertising across all media.
- Arts Council England champions, develops and invests in artistic and cultural experiences that enrich people’s lives.
- Animation UK campaigns for fairer trading conditions for UK animation producers.
- The British Academy of Film and Television Arts develops and promotes the art forms of the moving image by identifying and rewarding excellence, inspiring practitioners and benefiting the public.
- The British Film Commission (BFC) is the national agency with a remit to maximise and support the production of international feature film and television in the UK.
- The BFI brings together the BFI National Archive and BFI Reuben Library, film distribution, exhibition and education at BFI Southbank and BFI IMAX, publishing and festivals.
- British Interactive Media Association (BIMA) Promotes the British Digital Industry.
- Campaign is the world’s leading business media brand serving the marketing, advertising and media communities.
- Chartered Institute of Public Relations The CIPR is the official professional body that represents public relations in Britain.
- The Marketing Agencies Association Group (MAAG) is the trade body for future-thinking marketing communications agencies in Britain.
- Office of Communications Ofcom is the independent regulator and competition authority for the communication industries in the UK.
- The Public Relations and Communications Association exists to uphold standards in the public relations and communications industry.
- Skwigly is the longest running UK based animation magazine and community.

Available on all devices you can watch live; request and record and create your own playlists. It has an easy to search format that even helps with academic referencing.
