LLB (Hons) Law
“Edge Hill University was recommended to me by a cousin and I went to the open evening originally intending to study IT. At the event, apart from being really impressed by the facilities, the campus and the friendliness of all the staff, I was also surprised by the huge choice of degrees, which is how I changed my mind and decided to study law. Despite doing this at the last minute, the transfer to another course was very easy and everyone was very helpful in making this happen.
Like most people, I joined the University without knowing anyone there, but Edge Hill work hard to help students make friends by arranging all kinds of social activities that encourage people to get to know one another. Before you know it, you’ve met all sorts of new people, many of who you become really close to.
Throughout our course we were encouraged to obtain work experience within law firms and, if you follow this advice, it does become really useful later on when you go for job interviews. I completed the academic stage of legal training and then applied to Duncan Gibbins Solicitors for the role of Legal Assistant, which is where I worked as a qualified solicitor.
My role involved acting on behalf of clients in respect of a variety of personal injury claims. I liaised with clients, third party solicitors and the Court in order to obtain evidence that supports my clients’ claims, and then negotiated the best possible settlement on their behalf. One of the best things about my job is the satisfaction you feel when you’ve obtained compensation for clients who have been injured through no fault of their own.
Law is such a wide-ranging area and so the advice I’d give is to take the advice of your lecturers and to get as much work experience as you possibly can. That way, you give yourself the best chance of making sure you are going into the right area of law for you.”
