LLB (Hons) Law, 2011
An active life at Edge Hill led to so much more for James, going on to Chester College of Law prior to a training contract with international law firm, Trowers & Hamlins LLP, Manchester.
Extra-curricular activities included the student law society, the student newspaper, sports and activities societies, and work in a local college, developing skills that proved helpful in his career.
His biggest challenge was balancing those commitments, not least with a young family, a part-time job and numerous voluntary commitments, including roles with the police, NHS and in education – all while targeting university success.
James, also a professional ambassador, president of the Law Alumni Association, and working with Aspiring Solicitors, secured an Excellence Scholarship and was nominated for various awards by his employer and other organisations.
Starting his training contract in 2015, he qualified as a solicitor in 2017, attributing his success to a positive attitude towards learning new things, having good people-skills, being persistent and learning from rejection, and understanding areas for improvement.
“Nobody is perfect. Everybody has flaws. The key to being successful is to understand what those weaknesses look like and understand how to address them.”
