After 16 years as a professional footballer, including time at Aston Villa, Everton, Bolton Wanderers, and full Republic of Ireland honours, a life-threatening disease inspired a major rethink for Gareth.

While ‘fitter than ever’ following rehabilitation, he targeted a fresh challenge, prior experience in legal disputes and high-profile arbitration influencing moves towards becoming a solicitor. Subsequent enquiries at an Edge Hill open-day led to a six-week course developing academic skills and introducing him to law, and Gareth was full of praise for his tutors’ encouragement throughout.

He joined London’s Peters & Peters Solicitors, training in business crime, commercial litigation, civil fraud and asset tracing, adding, “knowledge, skill and expertise can only be built over time and experience. It can be daunting, knowing how much work is needed to get to that level again in a different field.”

Gareth has a keen interest in sports law and is currently on secondment at Everton Football Club with the in-house legal team.

“I never envisaged becoming a qualified solicitor. I’ve been extremely fortunate with the help I’ve had, beginning at Edge Hill.”
