For Nathan, there’s real satisfaction in seeing his workload lead to success stories for those he helps back on to their feet after past problems.
As manager of mentoring project, Cumbria Reducing Offending Partnership Trust, he works with offenders in the community, focusing on reducing re-offending through emotional and practical support, helping clients towards employment, not least through advising on disclosure offences to potential employers, and helping with CVs and job applications.
Nathan works with people convicted of almost all offences, trying to help them into employment. This can often be a challenge as some offences are a big barrier to gaining employment, and the mind-set of some organisations, makes it difficult for many individuals to find employment.
“Almost every week there’s a success story, for example when one service user, who previously committed quite a serious offence, managed to get a full-time engineering job. After being in prison for about 15 months, he’d been unemployed for six months, with this just the opportunity needed to help him move forward with his life.”
