As the first non-denominational teacher training college for women, Edge Hill was founded as an institution which broke traditional barriers for women and promoting women’s rights. Our University colours and graduation gowns still proudly display the colours of the suffrage movement.
We’ve come a long way since 1885, but even after decades of campaign, women’s rights remain an unfinished business.
To celebrate International Women’s Day 2023, Edge Hill have put together an exciting and inspiring programme of events over three days for everyone to get involved in, regardless of gender, age, or ethnicity.
Tuesday 7 March
Agents of Change

The Agents of Change panel consist of Natalie Denny, founder of The Period Project Merseyside and The Goddess Projects – working with women of colour to help empower and assist them in achieving their goals, Michelle Livesey, Hits Radio presenter who has driven changes to the laws around domestic abuse, and Alice Jackson, founder of award-winning Strut Safe – a free UK-wide phone service to help protect anyone who feels unsafe when walking in public.
These three amazing women will be telling us more about their individual stories, the obstacles they have faced and what inspired them to lead such incredible initiatives.
There will be a free welcome lunch and an opportunity for a Q&A session from the audience.

Sarah and Rachael will talk about their own career paths and how it has led them both to the world of data science. They will also discuss the different pathways to secure a career in data science.

Dr Sarah Williamson will explore art activism and ‘good activism’ for social justice and a better world through her innovative and imaginative work, which stages Barbie dolls in museums and art galleries. Expect to be educated and entertained by Sarah’s disruptive and subversive activism with a visual feast of photographs and behind the scenes stories.

During this talk, members of the Research Catalyst group will discuss their findings from their project which included exploring over 1400 women’s experiences who studied at Edge Hill College from 1885-1909. We will explore the importance of Edge Hill not just as an emerging provider and innovator of teacher training for women in the North of England but also as a contributor to the schools and communities these women joined following their time after Edge Hill.
