Meet the team

We are the EcoEdge team. We each bring expertise in our respective fields, supported by the wider Bioscience and Geoscience team at Edge Hill University. We combine knowledge in plant sciences, GIS, earth observation, and natural flood management to deliver trusted, data-driven insights that support your environmental goals.

Dr Sven Batke

Sven is a Chartered Member of CIEEM, the Horticultural Society, and a Fellow of the Linnean Society of London. He has expertise in plant taxonomy, ecology, environmental management, including management planning, GIS, data analysis, plant monitoring, and arboreal tree surveys. 

Dr Janet Richardson

Janet’s specialisms include  GIS, geomorphology, and sedimentology. She has a background in hydrology assessments, bedrock rivers, sediment transport, and river hydraulics. More recently, she has been awarded a Knowledge Exchange fellowship, funded by NERC, which has seen her work closely with Yorkshire Water, The Environment Agency, The Wildlife Trust, and The River’s Trust. 

Dr Nathan Thomas

Nathan is a former NASA scientist with 15+ years experience in remote sensing and GIS. Nathan has expertise in data processing and analysis of data collected from air, space, and ground. He is an expert in land cover extent and change mapping, ecosystem structure,  spatial modelling, machine learning, and algorithm development.

The accelerating loss of biodiversity demands urgent, expert attention. At Edge Hill’s EcoEdge, we will provide the scientific insight and strategic guidance needed to tackle today’s most pressing ecological threats.

Many of the UK’s waterbodies and catchments are failing to meet an ecological ‘good status’. This requires solutions from a multidisciplinary team that considers wider holistic management. This collaborative approach will help reduce pollution, water treatment costs, and flood risk, improving biodiversity overall. Further, it will help catchments meet the government’s 25 environmental year plan.

By translating science into action, we aim to help governments, industries, and communities make better decisions that protect ecosystems and secure a sustainable future.
