Dario Fo, Franca Rame, and Italian Civic Life

darioefranca_3dFranca Rame was a leading Italian actor, playwright and militant leftwing politician who was the wife and professional partner of Dario Fo, Nobel laureate playwright.  Professor Joseph Farrell was the last person to interview Franca Rame before her death in May 2013, a conversation published as Non è tempo di nostalgia (Pisa: Della Porta, 2013). His biography, Dario e Franca: la biografia della coppia Fo/Rame attraverso la storia italiana, (Milan: Ledizioni, 2014) will be launched by Professor George Talbot, Dean of Faculty of Arts and Sciences, EHU, at this event.

The seminar will be followed by a production of “Tutta casa, letto e chiesa”, Written by Dario Fo and Franca Rame, performed by critical acclaimed actress Marina de Juli. Read more about the seminar…


Joseph Farrell is Professor Emeritus of the University of Strathclyde, and Visiting Professor in Radical Comedy at Edge Hill University. His main research interests are in the fields of Sicilian culture and theatre history. He is author of Leonardo Sciascia, (Edinburgh University Press, 1995) and Dario Fo and Franca Rame: Harlequins of the Revolution. (London, Methuen, 2001). He co-edited with Paolo Puppa the History of Italian Theatre, (Cambridge University Press, 2006), and has edited volumes of essays on Carlo Goldoni, Dario Fo, Primo Levi, Carlo Levi, Ugo Betti and on the mafia. He has also produced editions of Fo’s Accidental Death of an Anarchist, Pirandello’s Six Characters in Search of an Author, and of Goldoni’s servant of Two Masters all for Methuen, London. His translations include novels by Leonardo Sciascia, Vincenzo Consolo, Daniele Del Giudice, as well as plays by Fo, Baricco, De Filippo and Goldoni. He is currently translating a series of detective novels by Valerio Varesi. A frequent contributor to radio arts programmes both in London and Scotland, he reviews regularly for several newspapers, including The Herald and The Times Literary Supplement. Sicily: A Cultural History was published in October 2012. His book length interview with Franca Rame, Non è tempo di nostalgia was published by Della Porta (Pisa) last year, and the revised, updated version of his biography of Fo and Rame is published by Ledizioni (Milan) under the title Dario e Franca: la biografia della coppia Fo/Rame attraverso la storia italiana.
