David Yip was the first Chinese lead actor in a British television drama series, fondly remembered by many for creating the role of Detective Sergeant John Ho, in ‘The Chinese Detective’ for BBC TV (1981 – 82.) Further television work included roles in Phil Redmond’s ‘Brookside’ for Channel 4, as well as in BBC’s ‘Holby City’, ‘Casualty’ and ‘Dr Who’, Sky Atlantic’s ‘Fortitude’ and Fox TV’s ‘24: Live Another Day.’
His film credits include ‘Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom’, directed by Stephen Spielberg; James Bond – ‘A View to a Kill’ directed by John Glen; ‘Entrapment’ directed by Jon Amiel; ‘Hamlet’ directed by Kenneth Branagh; ‘Ping Pong’ directed by Po – Chih Leong inter alia.
His recent theatre work includes ‘Yellow Face’ (2014) and ‘The Great Wave’ (early 2018), both at the National Theatre.
David’s own dramatic work has its roots in his experience of growing up in Liverpool. His father was a Chinese seaman and his mother was from Liverpool. ‘Gold Mountain’ (from 2010) is a multi-media theatre piece, co-produced with Liverpool’s Unity Theatre and Montreal’s Les Deux Mondes company, and performed in Montreal, Vancouver, Liverpool, London and Sweden.
David has also written and presented documentaries about the Liverpool Chinese community (‘Chinese Whispers’; 2000), while ‘Blue Funnel’ from 1998, produced by Gurinder Chadha and featuring David Yip, Burt Kwouk, and Ozzy Yue drew heavily on David Yip’s background.
This ICE event is in association with the Confucius Institute who will have some stalls in the foyer of the venue where you can try your hand at some traditional Chinese arts and crafts. This event will take place at Edge Hill University’s Ormskirk Campus.
