This event complements the current Tate Liverpool exhibition, ‘Francis Bacon – Invisible Rooms‘, which is the largest Francis Bacon show ever held in northern England, and which finishes on 18th September 2016. Kasia Redzisz is the curator of the Francis Bacon exhibition, and she will be in conversation with ICE’s Director, Professor Roger Shannon, after the screening of John Maybury’s film, ‘Love Is The Devil‘, which was produced by the British Film Institute, when Roger Shannon was Head of Production at the BFI.
Love Is The Devil: Study For A Portrait of Francis Bacon
Directed by John Maybury, 1998, won the Michael Powell Award for Best New British Feature Film at the Edinburgh International Film Festival. A biopic of Francis Bacon (Derek Jacobi), the film looks at the artist’s unlikely and tumultuous relationship with erstwhile thief George Dyer (Daniel Craig), who became Bacon’s lover after a botched break-in. After the unique beginning to their love affair, the well-connected and volatile artist assimilates Dyer into his circle of eccentric and often cold friends, including the caustic Muriel Belcher (Tilda Swinton), as Dyer’s struggle with addiction strains their bond. Music is composed by Ryuichi Sakamoto, and YBA’s Tracey Emin, Gillian Wearing, and Gary Hume pop us as extras alongside Stella McCartney. The event will take place at Edge Hill University’s Ormskirk Campus.
