‘HEE (NW) is delighted to support this important investigation into how best to support the improvement of individual clinical performance in challenging environments and increase resilience.’

In the steps of Olympic athletes: using performance psychology to improve clinical performance in challenging environments

Performance psychology has provided important theoretical perspectives and a range of practical approaches for improving the performance of Olympic athletes. The Masterclass will offer participants an opportunity to develop the essential understanding and skills to effectively support the improvement of individual clinical performance in challenging environments, such as the management of the acutely unwell patient.

This Masterclass can be used as a follow-up to the DEMEC 2017 A4 workshop : “Using personalised teaching and learning to improve clinical performance” or as a stand-alone event.

By the end of the Masterclass, participants will be able to:

• Understand how insights from performance psychology, especially in sport, can inform practical approaches to improve individual clinical performance of a range of clinical tasks in a variety of challenging environments

• Appreciate the importance of identifying and modifying individual emotions, ways of thinking, motivation and self-regulation to ensure appropriate responses before, during and after the performance task

• Consider three practical approaches that have been used to improve individual clinical performance of a range of clinical skills in a variety of challenging environments

• Develop their own practical skills in using performance psychology to support the improvement of individual clinical performance in challenging environments

• Appreciate the importance of developing resilience skills
