This module is aimed at a multi-professional senior clinical workforce. The module will enable students to examine critically the concepts of Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity (EDI) within their own discipline, reflect critically on their responsibilities and accountability, and develop a culture of inclusivity to enhance clinical education within their workplace. Individuals will reflect critically on their practices and values, with the aim of enabling everyone to play a positive role in their workplace clinical education. This is achieved by exploring how to break down barriers to equity of outcome and experience in clinical education and leadership programmes (including unconscious bias and stereotypes), and to challenge unacceptable behaviour effectively.
The phenomenon known as Differential Attainment can be defined as the gap between the attainment levels of different groups in recruitment, assessment pass rates, and professional appointment/promotion. It is a key aspect of EDI, and is a global problem, found in medical and non-medical higher and professional education. Differential Attainment occurs when cultural differences and unconscious bias can lead to lack of support and unequal opportunities (Woolf, 2016). Understanding why it happens is a crucial first step towards making medical education fairer and ultimately to improving healthcare and the patient experience. The need to examine culture and its impact on the outcome of clinical education has been highlighted by many of the regulatory bodies and has been used to drive the development of this module.
Who is this module for?
• This module is designed for a multi-professional group of senior clinicians and clinical educators., including doctors, dentists, nurses, and all members of HCPC professions.
• The module may be studied on a stand-alone basis or as an elective module within specific postgraduate programmes (see below)
What are the key aims of the programme?
• To equip senior clinicians, clinical educators and clinical leaders to respond appropriately to Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity (EDI) issues relating to clinical practice and to the standards and requirements of professional bodies.
• To explore ways that an individual can contribute to the development of an inclusive environment in healthcare settings, by role modelling inclusive behaviours, sharing best practice, and recognising how these can contribute to a good patient experience.
• To support senior clinical educators and leaders to identify and address any barriers for the progression of learners.
How Will I Study?
The module is blended in nature with 12 hours contact time, supported by online activities. Teaching and learning will explore ways in which an individual can contribute to the development of an inclusive environment in healthcare settings, by means of role modelling inclusive behaviours, and recognising how these can contribute to a good patient experience and sharing of best practice. A distinctive feature of this module is the opportunity for students to present their chosen 'case study' in person or via the internet, for formative feedback from peers and tutors. The module development was supported by Health Education England (NW).

How will I be assessed?
The module will be summatively assessed by the submission of one piece of coursework, which will be electronically submitted at the conclusion of the module.
• Case Study, presented in report format.
Guideline wordage: 4,000 words. (Learning Outcomes 1, 2 and 3)
The Case Study will address theory and practice. It will be a critical exploration of and reflection on a chosen aspect of EDI (negotiated individually with module tutors), with reference to relevant scholarly literature.
• In addition to the formal course-work assessment, a minimum of 70% of online activities must be completed. There is an expectation that these online activities will feed in to the formal assessment task.
On successful completion you will:
• Critically examine key attributes of Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity (EDI) within their own discipline, giving consideration to how this is maintained and integrated within the multi-professional workplace.
• Reflect critically on their own responsibilities and accountability to support and develop EDI in self and in others.
• Critically appraise challenges relating to ethical aspects of Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity (EDI) in healthcare, including local influences and cultures, contradictions, ambiguities and common misconceptions.
