This module focuses on the generation, development and application of research within the area of clinical education. This is not a generic "research methods" module, and it covers major debates within the research area, various approaches to research and evidence-based practice, and some of the major research methods which are employed in the study of clinical and professional education. Students will learn to critically appraise research findings in clinical and professional education and how they affect practice; and to plan and develop research inquiries of their own or joint research initiatives with other clinical practitioners.

Who is this module for?
• Postgraduate students [normally clinicians and/or clinical educators] enrolled for MA Clinical Education.
• The module may also be studied on a stand-alone basis by suitably experienced/qualified individuals.
What are the key aims of the programme?
• To introduce research philosophies, methodologies and methods, applicable to clinical education
• To critically appraise research findings in the fields of clinical/ medical/ professional education
• To introduce research planning and formulating a research proposal.
What will I study?
• Sharing an understanding of research (drivers & context).
• Exploring existing research into clinical education.
• Research traditions & paradigms within clinical education (e.g. positivist, interpretivist, critical, feminist etc).
• Research methodologies & methods suited to clinical education (e.g. qualitative, quantitative, mixed methods, case study, ethnography, action research etc).
• Research planning and management
• Formulating a research proposal
• Critical analysis & interpretation of research findings
• Ethical issues
How will I be assessed?
The module will be summatively assessed by the submission of two pieces of work, both of which must be passed. This will be electronically submitted at the conclusion of the module. The assessment of the module will address both theory and practice:-
1. Critical analysis of a relevant published research paper (Learning outcome 1)
Guideline wordage: 1,200 words (Overall weighting 30%)
2. Research proposal (Learning outcomes 2 & 3)
Guideline wordage: 2,800 words (Overall weighting 70%)
3. In addition to the two formal assessments, a minimum of 80% of online activities must be completed. It should be noted that this is a simple measure of quantity – the quality of responses to online activities will not be assessed. However, there is an expectation that activities will feed in to the two formal assessments.
On successful completion you will:
1. Critically evaluate research evidence in a chosen area of clinical education practice.
2. Plan a piece of research, and justify this to fellow professionals, demonstrating your awareness of both the theoretical and practical issues involved in the research.
3. Engage in critical reflection on the ethical issues raised by the conduct of research into aspects of clinical education in health care settings.
