Clinical Urology Skills: Flexible Cystoscopy HEA4260

Overview

The Flexible Cystoscopy module is delivered in partnership with Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals, and it will equip the student with the necessary skills and techniques to undertake diagnostic and surveillance flexible cystoscopies in adults. The module uses the current British Association of Urological Nurses (BAUN) requirements for training and assessment, contextualised with a sound theoretical and practical knowledge base. The student will develop a sound knowledge base, underpinned by contemporary, evidence-based urology clinical practice. To acquire the skills to perform diagnostic and surveillance flexible cystoscopies, you will need to identify a designated clinical supervisor to work alongside.

Who is this module for?

The module is designed for both Registered Adult Nurses and qualified Physician Associates who have ben identified by their senior clinicians as needing to perform flexible cystoscopies within their role.

What are the key aims of the module?

Demonstrate proficiency in undertaking flexible cystoscopy.
Critically appraise the assessment, care and management of the patient undergoing flexible cystoscopy, ensuring an evidence-based approach.
Critically reflect upon your role in working towards an increasing level of autonomous practice.

How will I study?

There will be three face to face study days at the Nightingale Education and Conference Centre at Whiston Hospital. Two will be at the beginning of the module and one towards the latter part of the module. This will allow for simulation of techniques as well as teaching sessions. You will also engage with further directed and independent study activities within the VLE on a weekly basis. A synchronous, online 2-hour group Collaborate session with the module team will be planned every 4 weeks and this will provide the opportunity for you to review your progress. You will develop flexible cystoscopy skills in your own workplace, having identified an appropriate Clinical Supervisor, normally a Consultant Urologist, who will be responsible for to completing the relevant competency documentation. Other senior staff may also be involved in your day to day supervision, training and practice, for example Urology Nurse Endoscopist or Urology Specialist Registrar. You will be assessed in accordance with the British Association of Urological Nurses (BAUN’s) current requirements for flexible cystoscopy skills and the module team will provide any support required in the supervisory process.

Will include completion of the current Flexible Cystoscopy Performance Criteria Training and Assessment Logbook (British Association of Urological Nurses (BAUN))

On successful completion you will:

Be competent in performing diagnostic and surveillance cystoscopies independently.
