Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) using the Microsoft Authenticator App
Introduction
Edge Hill University has deployed Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) to further secure our university systems and services – particularly those accessed from off campus. In addition to your username and password, MFA requires a secondary authentication method, typically an Authenticator App on your phone.
Before you start, you will need:
- An Android or iOS device such as a smartphone or tablet
- Access to a computer with network / internet access
Instructions
- From your computer, configure your MFA settings by following this link https://ehu.ac.uk/mfasetup
- When prompted, sign in to your University IT account using your credentials [email protected] and password
- Select ‘Next’ to continue
- From your mobile device, download and install the Microsoft Authenticator app. From your mobile device, install the latest version of the Microsoft Authenticator app, based on your operating system:
- Google Android. On your Android device, go to Google Play to download and install the Microsoft Authenticator app
- Apple iOS. On your Apple iOS device, go to the App Store to download and install the Microsoft Authenticator app
- Once the Microsoft Authenticator app is installed on your mobile device, follow the Set-Up Wizard to complete the app installation
- From your computer, select ‘Next’ to continue
- From your mobile device, open the Authenticator app and select
- Allow notifications (if prompted)
- Add account from the Customize and control icon on the upper-right
- Work or school accountThe Authenticator app’s QR code scanner will open
- From your computer, select ‘Next’ to continue
- From your mobile device, use the Authenticator app QR Code Reader to scan the unique QR code on your computer screen, select ‘Confirm’ (if prompted)
- From your computer, select ‘Next’ to continue. This will send a notification to your mobile device
- From your mobile device, select ‘Approve’ when prompted to accept the notification and to link your account to your Microsoft Authenticator app
- From your computer, select ‘Next’ to continue. Your account and your Microsoft Authenticator app are now linked
- From your computer, select ‘Next’ to continue
- From your computer, select ‘Done’ to complete the MFA registration









*** Congratulations, your account is now successfully registered for MFA ***
Please Note
- Additional MFA methods can be added via the My Security info page https://ehu.ac.uk/mysecurityinfo
- If you change your mobile device, please set up your MFA on your new device before removing the Authenticator app from your old phone
- If the trust relationship between your account and mobile device is unlinked / broken, IT Services will seek to verify your identity before resetting your registered MFA registration.
