Research

My research interests include coastal processes and geomorphology, coastal dune dynamics and scale issues limiting our ability to model beach-dune evolution. I have looked at the frequency/magnitude of aeolian transport events at the coast, and I have a keen interest on remote sensing and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) tools. I currently direct the Coastal Studies Lab (Sefton Coast) and aim at maintaining, diversifying, and promoting the study of beach and dune systems and their role as protective buffers against erosion and flooding.

I have benefited from academic/work experience in the UK, Ireland, Canada, Australia, and Spain and I continue collaborating with a number of international colleagues and graduate students. I am also interested on the applicability of my research to coastal management and have worked closely with custodians of the coastal landscape such as Parks Canada and Natural England. Research outcomes may be found in my Google Scholar profile and Research Gate.

Projects

My research is funded currently by grants from UK Research and Innovation, Natural England, Manchester Geographical Society, and the RIF Scheme at Edge Hill University. I have previously received support from projects funded by NERC, the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges, and Universities, and other agencies.

I am principal investigator in three on-going projects looking at the existence of large-scale coastal blowouts, the effect of inter-tidal troughs on sediment supply by wind to foredunes, and the role of human activities in changing the proportion of bare sand on coastal dune fields. I have also led two additional projects on modelling and measuring beach-dune interactions and I currently collaborate on projects lead by colleagues in the UK, Spain, and Portugal.


Supervision

I currently supervise several PhD students: Nicholas O’Keeffe (dune dynamics and evolution), Daniel Knight (coastal dune ecology in the UK), and Alex Amoakoh (multi-scale governance of coastal ecosystems; starting Sep 2019). I have directed Aneurin O’Neil’s MSc Program on Conservation Management (EHU) and hosted a number of visiting researchers including Dr Miquel Mir-Gual  (Universitat de les Illes Balears), Dr Carolina Peña-Alonso (Universidad de las Palmas de Gran Canaria) and Leví García-Romero (Universidad de las Palmas de Gran Canaria). I currently lead the MRes Geography, designed for Physical Geography graduates wishing to pursue a career in research.

Academic Service

I actively participate as a reviewer for a number of peer-reviewed international journals, including Geomorphology, Earth Surface Processes and Landforms, Aeolian Research, Journal of Geophysical Research, and Marine Geology among others. I am a grant reviewer for Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University and the Australian Research Council (ARC)’s National Competitive Grants Program.

Together with colleagues from Ulster (Professor Jackson) and Sevilla (Dr. Guisado-Pintado), I co-convene the Coastal Morphodynamics: Nearshore, Beach, Dunes session at the European Geosciences Union Assembly in Vienna. I am a Committee Member of the Women in Coastal Geociences and Engineering, and a member of a number of international societies including the International Society for Aeolian Research (ISAR) and the European Geosciences Union (EGU).
