Join David Hern as he talks about The Slavery Abolition Act, 1833. The Act provided for compensation to be paid by the government, not to people who had suffered the pain and indignity of slavery but, instead, to the owners of plantations where the enslaved people worked. The UK government were still paying interest up to 2015 on the loan they took out to pay the compensation.

People in Liverpool became closely involved in assisting the Confederate States but also in making huge wealth for themselves by bringing cotton through the US Government blockade of the Southern ports. The last surrender of the war in 1865, some 6 months after the formal end of the war, took place in the Mersey.
