Who knows what it is to flourish? Some say it is to experience happiness, others to have lived well and had a life of success, prestige or wealth; still others suggest that meaningfulness and authenticity is most important, while others argue that we need any combination of these aspects to work in our favour for a flourishing life.

What is clear is that in the, quite understandable, desire to improve human happiness, well-being, success and satisfaction, some researchers operationalise concepts and neglect the importance of our shared human form of life, the role of living language in human understanding, and the primacy of particularity and context.

This is important because of the potential for misapplying the concept in the areas of human knowledge and understanding, education, science and policy.

Eri Mountbatten-O’Malley, Senior lecturer in Education policy at Bath Spa University

During this talk and workshop Eri Mountbatten-O’Malley will discuss some of the key issues raised in his PhD research on the concept of human flourishing. He will relate this to how we might work towards developing more helpful ways of thinking about notions of goodness and flourishing for both persons and society in a post-COVID world.

Eri Mountbatten-O’Malley (FHEA) Eri is Senior Lecturer in Education policy at Bath Spa University (BSU) and he is a former GTA at Edge Hill University. Eri has a breadth of local and national experience working within the Third sector and student union movement, in particular researching and campaigning for social equality and disability rights. He has almost 10 years’ experience conducting social policy research in areas such as well-being, mental health, higher education policy and practice, and social welfare.
