Shotton & Shout
with The Edge Hill University Big Band
A Pre-festival concert performance for the Wigan International Jazz Festival
The Edge Hill University Big Band will be joined by two highly regarded tenor saxophonists for an evening of exciting big band jazz. Phil Shotton and special guest, from South Africa, Dan Shout will be featured with music from across the big band genre, including compositions by Dan Shout.
Phil Shotton regularly performs alongside many national and international jazz artists and has appeared at major jazz festivals, venues and music festivals throughout the country and abroad. With a sound reminiscent of the great swing era tenor saxophonists Phil is highly in demand as a soloist. A talented band leader and conductor, Phil will be recognised by audience members as the musical director of the EHUBB and other ensembles.
Dan Shout is a respected, sought-after jazz musician, band leader, educator and business owner based in Cape Town, South Africa. He has performed and or recorded in over 30 countries across five continents with the likes Johnny Clegg, Winston Mankunku, Maria Schneider (U.S.A), The Blues Broers, Robin Auld and the Mike Campbell Big Band to name a few. Shout’s original compositions reflect his life-trajectory through Southern Africa – his family’s emigration from Zimbabwe, his formative years in the Namib Desert and his spiritual homecoming to the slopes of Table Mountain where he now resides. The music is infused with the sounds and souls of the music and musicians Dan has been exposed to and with whom he has performed.
