Choosing your university is something you should think about carefully. And while your course is really important, so is choosing a place where you’ll feel comfortable living, commuting to and studying at for the next few years.

One of the best ways to get a feel for a university is to attend an open day. It’s a chance to get to know the university in an informal way. And see what student life is like in real time. Visiting and researching universities will help to make your decision a little bit easier. So come and experience our warm and welcoming community at Edge Hill. And read on for 10 reasons why you should attend an Edge Hill Open Day.

“Open Days are a great opportunity to see all that Edge Hill has to offer. From accommodation and student-led campus tours to subject talks held by lecturers. You can find out more about the course you’re interested in. And you can look around university facilities. Like The Sports Centre, Catalyst and The Hub. You’ll gain lots of information for you and your parents. As well as seeing how comfortable you’ll feel when you’re there. They’re a brilliant way to get to know the University.”

1. Get a feel for our campus

The best way to find out what campus is really like is to see it for yourself. Take a stroll around our landscaped gardens once you’ve been to your subject presentations. Can you picture yourself as a student here? Does it feel like a place where you could relax as well as study? University isn’t just about lectures the entire time. It’s about social and leisure spaces too.

2. Talk to our teaching staff

If you’re not sure which study path you’re going to take this is a great way to explore your options. Meet our friendly tutors who’ll be the ones that teach and support you throughout university life. Ask them questions about the course. Which modules are compulsory? Are joint honours available for the course(s) you’re interested in? What are the placement opportunities like? They’ll be happy to discuss in more detail about what to expect on different courses. And how you can tailor a course through module choices and other activities.

3. View specialist facilities

Enrich your learning with the facilities on offer at Edge Hill. Experience virtual reality in our Tech Hub. Get in front of the camera in our TV studios. And see how our dummies react to treatments in our Clinical Skills Centre. The use of facilities during your studies will allow you to apply theory to practice. A great skill which future employers will be looking to find.

4. Meet our students

Want to know more about campus life and what it’s really like to study at Edge Hill? Why not ask our students. They’re keen to share their experiences. And they can’t wait to show you their favourite social spaces on your guided campus tour. Find out top tips about starting university. Listen out for their perfect study spots. And hear all about the best places to hangout after lectures.

5. See where you’ll live

If you’re planning to live independently for the first time, there’s no better place to live than in our halls of residence. Did you know we’ve just been voted 1st in the UK for Student Accommodation (Uni Compare 2023)? All our halls are located right here on campus. No matter where you choose, you’ll never be far from your lectures, the Students’ Union or our many catering outlets. And with a range of prices, we offer accommodation to suit a range of budgets. So why not take a self-guided accommodation tour during your Open Day and see our halls for yourself.

6. Explore the local area

If you’re new to the area you’re probably wondering what’s on offer in Ormskirk. During your Open Day visit you’ll be able to explore the local town on a guided tour. And get a taste for what your future in Ormskirk will be like.

Use some time at your Open Day to take a short 10-minute walk into Ormskirk. Or hop on our free EdgeLink bus. Packed with shops, cafés, green spaces and a regular market, it has something for everyone.

7. Find out more about finance

You’ll find our Money Advice Team at the Student Experience Fair. Our money experts are on hand throughout the day to explain all things finance from funding, fees and loans to budgeting tips. You may even be eligible for a bursary or scholarship – one that you won’t have to pay back. Got a career-enhancing idea? Talk to us about our Student Opportunity Fund. An initiative developed to help provide the steppingstones towards making your career dream a reality.

8. Learn about student support services

We understand that everyone needs a little extra help from time to time. Whether that’s to do with settling in, academic support or something completely unrelated. Meet our welcoming support teams at your Open Day. You may wish to have 1:1 discussions, take time out in our quiet room, or bring your own comforting items like noise-cancelling headphones or sensory toys. And find out more about the support available at Edge Hill. No problem is too big or too small for us to tackle together.

9. Meet other people

Open Days are a great way to meet other potential students just like you. If you have any worries about going to university for the first time, you won’t be the only person feeling that way. Chat with others and share your passion. You might even make some new friends before you’ve started. And having a familiar face on campus, or on your course, will put you at ease when you do.

10. Confirm your future

We want you to be sure about your future. And the best way to do that is by doing your research and visiting us. It’ll help you to feel more confident that you’re making the right decision when it comes to making your shortlist and submitting your application.

Go where you feel comfortable. Not just where your friends are going. Attending an Open Day will help you to understand what it’ll be like to study here, how Edge Hill makes you feel and whether we’re the right fit for you.

“I spoke to a few current students on open day about how they were finding their time at Edge Hill and I also spoke to some students that were doing the same course I was applying for which was very helpful for me as they answered all the questions I had regarding the course. Make sure you ask as many questions as you can – the students and staff are more than happy to answer them.”
