Resonant Edge presents Russian Revolution Centenary
Music and Film at a time of Revolution
Thursday 9th November 5:00pm
Film: The Mirror
FREE booking required
‘Mirror’ is the celebrated Russian director Andrei Tarkovsky’s most autobiographical work in which he reflects upon his own childhood and the destiny of the Russian people. The film’s many layers intertwine real life and family relationships – Tarkovsky’s father, the poet Arseny Tarkovsky, reads his own poems on the soundtrack and Tarkovsky’s mother appears as herself – with memories of childhood, dreams and nightmares. From the opening sequence of a boy being cured of a stammer by hypnotism, to scene in a printing works which encapsulates the Stalinist era, “Mirror” has an extraordinary resonance and repays countless viewings.
Director: Andrei Tarkovsky
Running Time: 106 mins
On Thursday 9th November, Edge Hill University will host several events to mark the centenary of the Bolshevik Revolution, a conflict that shook the world on 6th and 7th November 1917 (or October 24th / 25th on the Julian calendar). The world’s first Marxist uprising, which in many ways grew out of the horrific consequences of the First World War, caused political reverberations the world over, many of which we are still living with to this day.
Our events will have the twin focus of Film and Music. We will be delighted to have Edouard Artemiev in our company during these dates. Artemiev is a Russian electronic music pioneer, who celebrates his 80th birthday in November and who was the composer on many of Andrei Tarkovsky’s most memorable films. We will also have the Russian composer Yuri Kasparov – Professor of Composition at the Moscow Conservatoire and who was awarded ‘Honored Art Worker of Russia’ by order of the Russian President in 2007 and ‘Chevalier dans L’order des Arts et des Lettres’ by the Minister of Culture of France in 2008. Kasparov’s extensive compositional output, from chamber through to symphonic works, also includes many film scores.
There will a symposium to examine the many fascinating facets of film and music in post-Revolutionary Russia – Music and Film at a time of Revolution – and members of the public will be warmly welcomed to its proceedings.
