Department of History – Careers Event

Join us for a unique opportunity to find out everything you’ve ever wanted to know about the different career routes available with a History Degree.

In attendance and on the panel will be a number of Edge Hill History graduates who have taken a wide variety of different career paths and will be available to answer questions, share their experiences and give advice on how you can make yourself employable upon graduation.

Phil Steele graduated from Edge Hill in 2010 before starting work with Shop Direct, the online retailer which includes and Since graduation Phil has continued to work his way up Shop Direct’s career ladder and now holds a senior management position in the company’s head office.

Jessica Dolphin graduated from Edge Hill in 2013 and secured a place on a prestigious graduate training scheme with Leeds City Council which saw her rotate around different departments and projects. She’s since completed the graduate scheme and has secured a promotion working for the Council as a Senior HR Officer.

Michelle Porter graduated from the University in 2013 and used the skills and experience from her History degree to move into the Legal profession. Michelle currently works for Fletchers Solicitors in Southport as a Litigation Paralegal and is studying for a Diploma in Law & Practice.

Lee Cook graduated from Edge Hill in 2010 with a degree in History with a dissertation focussing on the Contagious Diseases Acts (1864). That same year Lee undertook a part time Masters degree and achieved a Merit with a dissertation focused on the British Anatomy Act (1832). Lee is now studying for a PhD at Lancaster University.

Karen Van-Eker studied History at Edge Hill before staying on to complete a PGCE in Secondary Education (History). Karen was successful in securing a teaching career for the new academic year beginning September 2012 and has worked in two secondary, securing a permanent position in carrying out the Head of History role in a secondary school in Sefton. Karen has recently taken up the role of the More Able and Talented Co-Ordinator at her current place of employment.

Becka Colley is a Careers Adviser with Edge Hill University’s Careers Centre with specialist focus on History, Secondary Education, English, Sport and Media.
