Joyce’s War is the recently published wartime journal of Joyce Parry, which came to light after her death in 1992. Joyce was an Australian nurse who came to the UK in 1937 to find her roots in Wales and Liverpool. On the outbreak of war she signed up as a Queen Alexandra nurse working as a Sister on hospital ships, in India and the Middle East. Professor Rhiannon Evans, who was Pro Vice-Chancellor at the University from 1994-2008, is the editor of the book. The talk will be illustrated with photographs and illustrations as well as with images by war artists, including the local artist, Albert Richards. Rhiannon will also explore some of the highlights and challenges of editing her mother’s journal.
Joyce’s War: The Second World War Journal of a Queen Alexandria Nurse, Joyce Ffoulkes Parry, edited by Rhiannon Evans, (The History Press, 2015). Copies will be available to purchase at the event.
