What does ‘independence’ mean for and within the creative and cultural sectors? Independent, indie, freelance, entrepreneur, radical and oppositional are located on a continuum of independence signaling aesthetic, creative, economic, political or ideological distinctiveness. At the same time, when it comes to labour, these terms may be indicative of precarious or portfolio careers while changes to funding, production, distribution and marketing have transformed relationships between indies and audiences. This conference will consider the role, impact, benefits and characteristics of indies and independence within local, regional, national and global contexts.

Eddie Berg (Director of Partnerships, BFI)
