Nurses Working as Approved Clinicians
Dr Adrian Jones is the Associate Chief of Staff, Nursing for
Mental Health & Learning Disability Programme Group based in the Ablett
Unit, Ysbyty Glan, Clwyd. He is also a Visiting Reader at Glyndÿr
His academic interests include new ways of working such as nurse prescribing,
MDT working and the newly established role of responsible clinician. In 2010
Adrian became the first nurse in Wales to qualify as an Approved Clinician
under the Mental Health Act (2009).
Adrian has published 50 articles on a wide range of topics including nursing
theory, care pathways, nurse prescribing and psychiatric medication. He has
also published a book on nurse prescribing in mental health.
This lecture will introduce the concept of the approved
clinician role. It will focus on the process of training, competency
assessment, close working with the designated consultant psychiatrist, models
of working and supervision. Adrian will also cover typology of service users
that are deemed suitable to be managed by a non medical responsible clinician.
This lecture will be based on Adrian’s own
application of the non-medical responsible clinician role within an assertive
outreach team in North Wales.
