Edge Hill University 2nd Year Drama Students present Fear and Misery of the Third Reich
In January 30th 1933, Adolf Hitler was appointed as Chancellor of Germany. Bertolt Brecht’s Fear and Misery of the Third Reich showcases the lives of regular German citizens from 1933 to 1938, as the looming shadow of fascism slowly envelops their nation and prepares to spread across Europe.
Edge Hill University’s 2nd year Drama students present 15 of Brecht’s episodes, translated by John Willett, showing in vivid detail a world where friends are turned against friends, where parents cannot trust their own children, and husbands and wives are torn apart by the Nazi regime. Using Brecht’s epic theatre style and chillingly comedic lens to analyse the material conditions of 1930s Germany, this performance asks some sobering questions: how did things get this bad, and what would you have done in the same situations?
