In the American Deep South half a century ago change was coming, a change that was sound tracked by the intense uplifting power of negro spiritual music.

This is the remarkable story of one family’s fight for freedom and progress. A wonderfully enjoyable yet deeply resonant play, with strong links to history, music and English. A story of redemption, family history, and social change, this play is in equal parts joyful and moving. The haunting melodies of songs like Let My People Go and Swing Low echo beautifully around the stage.

‘I am Lizzie Walker taking the name of trouble because of the trouble behind, taking the name of fighter because of the struggle ahead.’

12 year old Lizzie tells us her story of life in the Deep South in the 1950s, in this inspirational and uplifting tale.
