On Thursday, 2 October, 2008, the Regional Maxillofacial Unit (MFU) at Aintree University Hospital will be re-accredited as a Practice Development Unit at an awards ceremony being held in the Oliver Thomas Suite at the hospital.
In 1996 the MFU decided to pursue PDU status. During this process the unit worked closely with Edge Hill School of Health Studies and Aintree Hospital Trust to produce the accreditation tool that is now used in this unit as well as a number of other units in the North West .This goal was achieved and the unit became the first fully accredited PDU in the Aintree Hospital NHS Trust in June 1998. Since then the Unit has continued to develop and has now expanded as a national and international centre of excellence and will gain recognition for this at the awards ceremony.
The PDU deliver high standards of care to patients during their stay on the ‘Maxillofacial Unit’. Their care is planned according to individualized, emotional, psychological and spiritual needs which is supported by research / evidence based practice wherever possible. At the very heart of this Unit is a dedicated multi-professional team which works together in order to achieve sophisticated, co-ordinated care.
