Professor Jennifer Coates will be presenting a talk entitled “Language Play” at Edge Hill University on Thursday 17th April, exploring humour and creativity in everyday talk.
A pioneering figure in the field on language and gender, Professor Coates is an engaging speaker and the author of many highly regarded textbooks in use from A-level through to postgraduate studies. Her talk will focus on the interpersonal and textual functions of language, considering playful ways of talking at all levels of language and examining transcripts of spontaneous conversation to identify playful characteristics.
The event is aimed at both teachers and sixth form students and completely free of charge. As well as attending the talk, you’ll have the chance to participate in an optional campus tour, giving you a flavour of life at Britain’s fastest growing university.
