Mosquito bite

Mosquito bite

The challenges associated with the control of mosquito vectors of malaria and dengue fever and the risk of invasive mosquito species to the UK – Dr Clare Strode, Edge Hill University

Despite their small size mosquitoes have had and continue to have a huge global impact on the transmission of diseases such as malaria and dengue fever. By exploring the biology and ecology of mosquitoes we will look at the challenges associated with their control, including how they have genetically adapted in the face of insecticide-based control methods. We will also look at how increasing globalisation and potentially climate change have helped the spread of mosquito vectors across the world. Finally we will investigate the risk of invasive mosquitoes being introduced in the UK and the role researchers at Edge Hill University are playing in this latest challenge.
