Finding Solutions to Pregnancy Problems – Jayne Charnock

Jayne has a long-standing interest in understanding the development of the placenta and the treatment of complications during pregnancy. Her work is concerned with pregnancy problems such as restriction of fetal growth within the womb, stillbirth, pre-eclampsia, maternal diabetes and premature labour, all of which threaten the lives and health of both mothers and babies every day. The effects of which can also last a lifetime by increasing the risk of offspring developing cardiovascular disease, diabetes or obesity in adult life. 1 in 5 pregnancies experience one of these complications and this results in an estimated $US41 billion of the developed world’s annual direct healthcare costs being attributed to the provision of antenatal care and treatment for major pregnancy complications.  Jayne will discuss her previous work within Europe’s largest pregnancy research group at the Maternal and Fetal Health Research Centre in Manchester, and her ongoing studies into developing therapies for fetal growth.
