The Forest Brothers

1953. Europe is at peace, but war still wages on in the Baltic states. Locked in a Soviet prison cell comrades Jānis and Arvīd try to keep their heads above water, but when a new prisoner is pushed into the cell with them, it’s not just the water that poses a threat. Surviving the ordeal without sin seems impossible.

Kate Wilson is this years winner of The Dame Janet Suzman Playwriting Prize, which provides the opportunity for Edge Hill University Department of English and Creative Arts students to write an original script for stage.

Kate Wilson is a British writer and playwright based in the Northwest of England. Still early in her writing career: Kate graduated from Edge Hill University in 2021 with a first-class Creative Writing degree following a change in career at the age of 30. Kate is currently undertaking a Masters by Research in Creative Writing while working full time in the Research Facilitation and Delivery Unit at the University of Central Lancashire. Kate is currently developing several scripts for the theatre and screen.

The play explores very resonant themes of physical and mental struggle, searching for strength in a place where all seems hopeless and the importance of brotherhood.

I have seldom read a play so spare, so threatening, so apt for the times we live in.” – Judge Dame Suzman DBE
