Join Edge Hill University’s Centre for Social Responsibility as we launch Mebs Ahmed’s’ fascinating autobiography which charts his childhood in rural Pakistan, his move to England as a child and his ‘failure’ at schools in Yorkshire and Lancashire.
After working in a series of mundane jobs, then a career on the buses, Mebs joined Lancashire Constabulary as a probationary officer. Some years later he was selected to lead on a piece of work to address the under-representation of Black and Minority Ethnic communities within Lancashire Constabulary. This piece of work received national recognition, with local and national awards and a reception with the then PM Gordon Brown at Downing Street. In 2003 he was elected as the Chair of the Lancashire Black Police Association.
Mebs retired as a police officer in 2013, went to work for Staffordshire Police as their Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Officer, came back to Lancashire eighteen months later, following the birth of his granddaughter. Mebs has continued to support people through mentoring and delivers training around Diversity, Equality and Inclusion and Unconscious Bias. In 2020 he became a member of Edge Hill University’s Service User and Carer Group, taking opportunities to share his experiences with our students.
The evening will focus on his experiences as a police officer: his reasons for joining the force, the roles he carried out, the barriers and challenges he faced and how he overcame them.
The session opens at 4.30pm for registration and the talk will take place 5-6pm. There will be time built in for questions and books will be available to buy at a discounted price of £10.
