On Friday 29 March, second year History students went on a research trip to the Lancashire Record Office and then on to the Harris Museum and Gallery in Preston. A great deal of fascinating primary material was laid out for the students to view and handle at the Lancashire Archives including, WW1 tribunal records and items from the Selina Cooper archive, a prominent Lancashire suffragist.
Students were also given a sense of the size of the full collection held by Record Office as they had a behind-the scenes tour. The sound archive provoked some questions as students had never seen a Betamax video before!
They were also introduced to some of the varied occupations related to archival work, including a look at what a conservator does. After lunch, a tour of the Discover Preston exhibitions at the Harris Museum gave some great insights into Preston’s history.
