Karen Van Eker
BA (Hons) History, 2010
PGCE Secondary Education (History), 2011
Like many History students, Karen Van Eker came to university aspiring to become a History teacher and, after graduating with excellent grades, won a highly sought after place on Edge Hill’s PGCE programme.
Within a year of completing her PGCE, Karen secured her first teaching post, and by 2016, had progressed to Head of History at Stanley High School in Sefton where, in addition to her teaching and managerial responsibilities within the school, she was also the More Able and Talented Co-Ordinator. Karen has recently taken the next step in her career by accepting the role of Head of Humanities, managing History, Geography and RE. She now shares her experiences as a trainee teacher with current History students at careers events, offering advice and guidance to the History teachers of tomorrow.
“Achieving a senior position as Head of Humanities within five short years of starting a teaching career is no easy task and we are immensely proud of Karen’s accomplishment. Her achievement is testament to her hard work and dedication, but also to the quality of her studies at Edge Hill.”
