BA (Hons) English Language, 2015
Emily knew she wanted a career in HR but felt her English degree was too broad to give her the specific skills she needed for her chosen field. She met this challenge by being pro-active in her job hunt and undertaking work experience while at Edge Hill with the UK’s largest inflight service company, Alpha LSG, the employer she now works for.
Emily shadowed the HR Director and made numerous contacts during her placement, leading to a permanent job offer with the company on graduation. Starting off as a Human Resources Advisor, Emily has now become the Communication and Engagement Advisor for Alpha LSG. Her role involves internal marketing, writing articles for the company magazine and internal business updates, among other things, which allows her to draw on the skills she acquired during her English Language degree.
“Work experience is important because it allows you to make connections and get your foot in the door. Having an English degree is not a hindrance to a chosen career outside of the sectors English graduates traditionally go into, such as teaching, journalism or publishing, it’s just about how you translate it.”
