Entry Criteria

This course is for those with little or no previous knowledge of Spanish.

Emphasis is set on:

  • learning language for everyday situations in Spain or Spanish speaking countries
  • a communicative approach to allow you to use the language
  • developing confidence and a degree of accuracy when using the language in a limited range of everyday situations encountered when interacting at a basic level with sympathetic native speakers
  • developing effective language learning strategies (e.g. using a bilingual dictionary; understanding basic grammatical categories; etc)

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • Use everyday greetings
  • Give basic information about themselves
  • Describe their family
  • Order food and drink
  • Ask for and give directions
  • Tell the time
  • Book accommodation
  • Enquire about transport
  • Enquire about information in a town
  • Use the days of the week and months of the year

What will you do in the weekly sessions?

Students will practice listening, speaking, reading and writing in the sessions. You will be expected to take part actively in tasks like small group and pair work, role play, and individual or group presentations.

Independent Learning

Your progress will be greatly enhanced if you reinforce the topics covered in the group with some private study.

The main course book is BBC Talk Spanish 1. You should purchase the book before you start the course.

Please note the following before signing up:

  • If you are a student, there is a fee of £80.00 for this course, however, for EHU students, the Language Centre will apply to the Student Opportunity Fund (SOF) on your behalf to cover this tuition fee. Please note that by applying for this course free of charge, you are also applying to the SOF to cover your fee. You will be making a commitment to access a professional development opportunity and you will be expected to attend lessons on a regular basis. Students who have registered for credit-rated language modules should not apply for Language Steps unless it is a different language. Places are available at the discretion of the Language Centre and will be capped when courses reach full capacity.
  • If you are a member of the community, please note that our courses are only suitable for participants over the age of 18.
  • Please note that fees for Steps language classes are non-refundable.

Entry Criteria

This 10 week course is aimed at those who have completed Step 1 (equivalent of 20 hours of tuition) or at those who already have a basic knowledge of language. It is also suitable for those who may have studied Spanish some time ago.

Emphasis is set on:

  • Reinforcing and extending content from Step 1
  • Achieving a practical level of communication in all four skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing)
  • Developing greater confidence and accuracy when using the language in a limited range of situations
  • Stimulating students’ interest in the Spanish-speaking world and deepening their knowledge and understanding of Spanish-speaking societies.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • Participate in short conversations on familiar topics
  • Ask for local information when travelling in Spain or a Spanish-speaking country
  • Enquire about accommodation
  • Report problems related to travelling
  • Express opinions when shopping
  • Talk about future and past events
  • Make suggestions and refuse politely in social situations

What will you do in the weekly sessions?

Students will practice listening, speaking, reading and writing in the sessions. The emphasis is on student participation and you will be expected to take part actively in tasks like small group and pair work, role play, and individual or group presentations.

Independent Learning

Your progress will be greatly enhanced if you reinforce the topics covered in class with some private study.

You will be expected to buy Talk Spanish 2 published by BBC Active as course book for this course.

Entry criteria

This course is aimed at those who have attended Step 1 and 2 (equivalent of 40 hours of tuition) or at those who already have a reasonably sound knowledge of everyday Spanish and wish to develop their language skills. It is also suitable for those who may have studied Spanish in the past and who wish to refresh their knowledge and build on this.

Emphasis is set on:

  • Reinforcing and extending content from Step 1 and 2
  • Achieving an intermediate level of communication in all four skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing)
  • Achieving an overall understanding of written and spoken Spanish
  • Developing even greater confidence and accuracy when using the language in a broader range of situations
  • Developing the ability to apply grammatical rules in order to speak and write Spanish fluently and accurately
  • Stimulating interest in the Spanish-speaking world and deepening their knowledge and understanding of Spanish-speaking societies

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

  • Participate in a range of conversations on a range of topics
  • Socialise effectively and make plans with people
  • Talk about their town and home in detail
  • Talk about future and past events
  • Communicate in various settings
  • Talk about the weather
  • Understand a range of texts aimed at adult speakers and convey clear messages

You will be expected to buy “Sueños World Spanish 2” Intermediate course (new edition) by Juan Kattan-Ibarra, Aurora Longo and Almudena Sánchez, published by the BBC.
