 Entry Criteria

This course is for those with little or no previous knowledge of German.

Emphasis is on:

    • achieving a basic level of communication in all four skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing)
    • developing confidence and a degree of accuracy when using the language in a limited range of everyday situations encountered when interacting with sympathetic native speakers
    • Stimulating interest in Germany and German-speaking countries and deepening understanding of cultural traditions.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • Use everyday greetings
  • Give basic information about themselves
  • Describe their family
  • Order food and drink
  • Ask for and give directions
  • Tell the time
  • Book accommodation
  • Enquire about transport
  • Enquire about information in a town
  • Use the days of the week and months of the year

What will you do in the weekly sessions?

Students will practise listening, speaking, reading and writing in the sessions. The emphasis is on student participation and you will be expected to take part actively in tasks like small group and pair work, role play, and individual or group presentations.

Independent Learning

Your progress will be greatly enhanced if you reinforce the topics covered in the group with some private study.

The main course book is BBC Talk German 1. You should purchase this book before you start the course.

  • If you are a student, there is a fee of £80.00 for this course, however, for EHU students, the Language Centre will apply to the Student Opportunity Fund (SOF) on your behalf to cover this tuition fee. Please note that by applying for this course free of charge, you are also applying to the SOF to cover your fee. You will be making a commitment to access a professional development opportunity and you will be expected to attend lessons on a regular basis. Students who have registered for credit-rated language modules should not apply for Language Steps unless it is a different language. Places are available at the discretion of the Language Centre and will be capped when courses reach full capacity.
  • If you are a member of the community, please note that our courses are only suitable for participants over the age of 18.
  • Please note that fees for Steps language classes are non-refundable.

Entry Criteria

This course is aimed at those who have completed Step 1 (equivalent of 20 hours of tuition) or at those who already have a basic, everyday vocabulary at their disposal but are seeking to widen and improve it. It also suited to those who may have studied German some time ago and are able to recall simple expressions and make basic statements in German.

Emphasis is set on:

  • reinforcing and extending content from Step 1
  • achieving a practical level of communication in all four skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing)
  • developing greater confidence and accuracy when using the language in a limited range of situations
  • stimulating interest in the Germany and the German-speaking world and deepening understanding of German traditions.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • Participate in short conversations on familiar topics
  • Ask for local information when travelling in Germany or German-speaking countries
  • Enquire about accommodation
  • Report problems related to travelling
  • Express opinions when shopping
  • Talk about future and past events
  • Make suggestions and refuse politely in social situations

Entry Criteria

This course is suitable for those who have completed Step 1 and 2 (equivalent of 40 hours of tuition). It also suitable for those who already have a reasonable knowledge of German or those who are able to understand everyday expressions spoken at a relative speed, or at those who are able to form a range of statements in the present and past tense.

Emphasis is set on:

  • Equipping students with the ability to get by in a much wider range of everyday situations in Germany or German-speaking countries
  • Achieving an intermediate level of communication in all four skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing)
  • The ability to write and speak with grammatical accuracy
  • Developing fluency in the spoken language
  • Stimulating interest in the German-speaking world and deepening knowledge and understanding of German-speaking societies

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Talk in detail about yourself and describe aspects of your life
  • Give your impressions and opinions on past experiences
  • Discuss education
  • Describe future plans
  • Talk about leisure activities and your town
  • Compose a CV in German
  • Discuss occupations
  • Discuss transport and accommodation
