Entry Criteria

This 10 week course is aimed at those with little or no previous knowledge of French.

Emphasis is set on:

  • achieving a basic level of communication in all four skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing)
  • developing confidence and a degree of accuracy when using the language in a limited range of everyday situations encountered when interacting with sympathetic native speakers
  • Stimulating interest in France and French speaking countries and understanding cultural traditions.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • Use everyday greetings
  • Give basic information about themselves
  • Describe their family
  • Order food and drink
  • Ask for and give directions
  • Tell the time
  • Book accommodation
  • Enquire about transport
  • Enquire about information in a town
  • Use the days of the week and months of the year

What will you do in the weekly sessions?

Students will practise listening, speaking, reading and writing in the sessions. They will be expected to take part actively in group and pair work and role plays.

Independent Learning

Your progress will be greatly enhanced if you reinforce the topics covered in the group with some private study.

The main course book is BBC Talk French 1. You should purchase this book before you start the course.

  • If you are a student, there is a fee of £80.00 for this course, however, for EHU students, the Language Centre will apply to the Student Opportunity Fund (SOF) on your behalf to cover this tuition fee. Please note that by applying for this course free of charge, you are also applying to the SOF to cover your fee. You will be making a commitment to access a professional development opportunity and you will be expected to attend lessons on a regular basis. Students who have registered for credit-rated language modules should not apply for Language Steps unless it is a different language. Places are available at the discretion of the Language Centre and will be capped when courses reach full capacity.
  • If you are a member of the community, please note that our courses are only suitable for participants over the age of 18.
  • Please note that fees for Steps language classes are non-refundable.

Entry Criteria

This course is aimed at those who have completed Step 1 or at those who already have a basic, everyday vocabulary at their disposal but are seeking to widen and improve it. It also suited to those who may have studied French before (equivalent of 20 hours) and are able to recall simple expressions and make basic statements in French.

Emphasis is set on:

  • reinforcing and extending content from Step 1
  • achieving a practical level of communication in all four skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing)
  • developing greater confidence and accuracy when using the language in a limited range of situations
  • stimulating interest in the French-speaking world and deepening understanding of French traditions.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • Participate in short conversations on familiar topics
  • Ask for local information when travelling in France or a French-speaking country
  • Enquire about accommodation
  • Report problems related to travelling
  • Express opinions when shopping
  • Talk about future and past events
  • Make suggestions and refuse politely in social situations

Entry Criteria

This course is for those who have completed Step 1 and 2 (equivalent of 40 hours of tuition) or at those who already have a reasonably sound knowledge of everyday French and wish to develop their language skills to communicate effectively with native speakers. It is also suited to those who may have studied French in the past who wish to refresh their knowledge and build on this.

Emphasis is set on:

  • Reinforcing and extending content from Step 1 and 2
  • Achieving an intermediate level of communication in all four skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing)
  • Achieving an overall understanding of written and spoken French
  • Developing even greater confidence and accuracy when using the language in a broader range of situations
  • Developing the ability to apply grammatical rules in order to speak and write French fluently and accurately
  • Stimulating interest in the French-speaking world and deepening their knowledge and understanding of French-speaking societies

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

  • Participate in a range of conversations on a range of topics
  • Socialise effectively and make plans with poeple
  • Talk about their town and home in detail
  • Talk about future and past events
  • Communicate in various settings
  • Talk about the weather
  • Understand a range of texts aimed at adult speakers and convey clear messages

You will be expected to buy “The French Experience 2” by Mike Garnier and Jeanine Picard, published by the BBC as a course book. There will also be a large number of resources made available by your tutor.
