Secondary phase

Welcome from the Head of Secondary and Further Education

Professor David Aldridge, Head of Secondary and Further Education

Our Secondary Initial Teacher Education (ITE) programmes include the Secondary PGCE (in English, Mathematics, Geography, History, Computer Sciences and IT, Physical Education, Religious Education and Biology), the three-year secondary undergraduate programme with QTS (in English, Mathematics and Religious Education), and the PGCE with Lead delivery partners. In all, there are over 420 students across the three routes this year.

We currently have ITE placements in 155 secondary schools across predominantly the North West of England.

Our Secondary ITE programmes aim to foster beginner teachers’ commitment to social justice, as well as provide the knowledge and experiences that will prepare them to positively transform the life chances of learners, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Our Secondary ITE curriculum is structured around the Faculty of Education’s shared ITE pillars of

  1. Personal and professional attitudes, values and beliefs.
  2. Subject and curriculum knowledge.
  3. The craft of teaching and pedagogy.
