Covid Frequently Asked Questions

1. When will you reopen?

• As our facilities are located within a campus-based University, our approach to re-opening is going to be a little different to the wider sport and leisure sector as we have a lot of other factors to take into account.
• We are due to re open on the 2nd December 2020, Following Government guidelines placing us in Tier 3 our facilities are limited to Fitness Suite & Swimming Pool – Outdoor Facilities, Indoor Classes, Sport Hall Activities are hopefully going to re commence in the New Year.
• We will have to limit the numbers in facility areas and restrict access at times in the short term, with booking processes in place. We will constantly review this in line with Government and Public Health guidance.
• We thank you for your continued patience during this time and look forward to seeing you in person soon.

2. What will happen to my membership?

• All paid memberships were automatically frozen at the start of the closure period. All paid members will be able to attend the facility upon re-opening.
• Once a reopening date is finalised, we will provide details on how this impacts memberships. However, be rest assured as a minimum your membership will be covered for all days already purchased.
• For our Direct Debit members, we will inform you when these will be reinstated.

3. What activities will be available?

• In the first phase of re-opening if you have a paid membership, you will be able to pre-book for the following sessions: the Fitness suite; to attend outdoor fitness classes as long as you have a paid membership.
• The swimming pool has now also reopened. The Health Suite still remains closed.
• Following Government guidelines placing us in Tier 3 our facilities are limited to Fitness Suite & Swimming Pool – Outdoor Facilities, Indoor Classes, Sport Hall Activities are hopefully going to re commence in the New Year.
• We will have to limit the numbers in facility areas and restrict access at times in the short term, with booking processes in place. We will constantly review this in line with Government and Public Health guidance.
• We will be not be accepting Casual or new members in the first phase.
• All bookings must adhere to National Governing Body guidance. Please note: All indoor sport (e.g. badminton) can only be played with members of the same household or student cluster on campus.

4. How will you keep the users and staff safe?

• When you return, you’ll notice several changes to help keep you and our staff safe.
• One-way directional signs to help you move around and maintain social distancing.
• Pre-booking your fitness / class session online in advance to maintain social distancing. You can do this by visiting our Online Bookings. The online booking system is currently closed and will go live in due course. Please visit our ‘How to’ guide of how to book your session once its live.
• Fitness equipment rearranged so you can be assured that you are working out safely.
• More robust cleaning procedures in the Sport Centre in line with official guidelines and cleaning breaks in the activity programmes to ensure our teams can clean spaces without customers in the area.
• Regular cleaning of high traffic areas and touch surfaces will be throughout the day.
• New cleaning stations and hand sanitisation units.
• Customers asked to clean down equipment after use to help us maintain cleaning standards.
• Operating a cashless payment process.

In line with government guidance, if you are showing any of the symptoms for Covid-19, please refrain from coming to the centre.

5. How will Fitness and classes be different?

• All Fitness and class sessions will need to be booked in advance.
• Students and staff will be able to book up to 7 days in advance.
• Community members will be able to book up to 3 days in advance.
• Class and Fitness Suite numbers will be limited to help with social distancing.
• Bookings to be made through our Online Bookings or by phone.
• Personal sweat towels will be prohibited.
• Water fountains will not be in use so please bring your own drinks. Cold drinks are available to purchase from our reception.
• Music levels will be kept low.
• No changing rooms will be available for anyone using the Fitness Suite or classes.

Exercise Duration

Each session will be limited to 60 minutes.
Consecutive bookings are prohibited.
Maximum of 15 minutes on any piece of equipment to allow fair usage for all members.

Hand Cleaning

Please maintain good personal hygiene including washing your hands regularly
Use the hand sanitiser stations before and during your visit.
You will be required to clean down any equipment you use after you’ve used it.
Extra hygiene stations will be available.

On Arrival & Departure

Arrive a few minutes early but no more than 15 minutes before your session starts. You may have to wait outside the centre.
Come dressed ready to exercise as no changing facilities will be available.
Please leave the centre immediately after your session.
Please cancel your session two hours or more in advance if you can’t attend. Arrears will be incurred for non-cancellations and no-shows.

Directional Arrows & Social Distancing

Follow the directional arrows around the building and Fitness Suite.
Keep an appropriate social distance.
Be respectful to staff and other users.

6. Will there be group exercise classes?

• We will have a Virtual & Outdoor timetable, ensuring we don’t have back to back classes which will allow for suitable changeover time between classes.
• Additional ‘virtual’ classes’ will be live streamed, for you to undertake in the comfort of your own home.
• Access to our new Technogym On Demand via the Technogym App. This will include over 100 fitness work out videos along with our own classes.
• All equipment will be wiped and hygienically clean before you use it.
• Music levels will be kept lower than normal.

7. What to expect if I want to go swimming?

Swimming will only be available in our second phase of opening

The swimming pool is placed in the second phased as we are installing brand new cubicle doors around the full sports centre. Therefore, from September: –

• To swim you will need to book your session via our Online Bookings.
• Students and staff will be able to book up to 7 days in advance.
• Community members will be able to book up to 3 days in advance.
• The pool will be mostly lane swimming with extra wide lanes. Each lane will have a limited amount of bathers.
• All sessions are 60 minutes in duration.
• Access to the poolside changing rooms will be available 15 minutes before your session starts.
• Swimmers are encouraged to arrive with their swimsuits underneath their clothing to minimise time in the changing rooms.
• Only the wetside Changing rooms, toilets, cubicles and lockers will be available. Hairdryers and hair straightener’s will not be available.
• The pre-swim showers will be in operation prior to entering the pool for you, however the showers in the changing rooms will not be in operation and therefore we ask you to shower at home.
• Please keep to the booking times by turning up on time, leaving no later than 15 minutes after your session finishes.
• Cancel your session 2 hours or more in advance if you can’t attend. Arrears will be incurred for non-cancellations and no-shows.
• Please bring your own swimming aid or kickboards or any equipment you might need for your swim as equipment will not be available to borrow.

8. What are the opening times?


We have had to revise our opening times as follows:–

Monday – Thursday 07.00-21.15
Friday 07.00-20.15
Weekends 09.00-17.00

We will be closing daily from 13.00-14.00 to enable staff to complete an enhanced cleaning regime on top of the normal cleaning.

9. Will there be changing facilities available?

• Only the pool changing rooms are open for swimmers only.
• All other changing rooms will be closed until further notice.
• We are asking all members to come ‘activity’ ready.
• There will be lockers available in the sports hall corridor, yet please refrain from bringing excessive amount of bags.

10. Will Personal training still be available?

• No PT will be available, due to the social distancing measures we have employed.
• We will be offering individual consultation sessions via our video platform, for advice and new workout sessions.
• We will be placing challenges on to the Technogym app to aid you with all your fitness needs.
• Access to our new Technogym On Demand via the Technogym App. This includes over 100 fitness work out videos along with our own classes.

11. Will I be able to use the drinking fountains?

• We encourage all users to bring their own drinks as the water fountains will be turned off as per public health guidance. We will continue to review this as guidance changes.

12. Will the health suite be open?

• The sauna and steam room will remain closed initially as per guidance.
• We will closely monitor and update accordingly.

13. When can the University student sports clubs start playing?

• We will continue to be guided by the Government and National Governing Bodies of Sport regarding a safe return to play for all our clubs.
• Each National Governing Body must first provide a government approved statement before we can introduce them back into our University programme.
• British University and Colleges Sport (BUCS) have decided that inter-University leagues will not begin until late January 2021 but expect most sports to return to play at some point during the first term.
