Employability

The Creative Arts employability strategy offers a wide range of presentations, seminars and workshops. They are presented by industry professionals and our own inspiring graduates. This happens within modules and within the placements, shadowing roles and mentorships we offer. Graduates have gone on to positions with companies such as ITV, Planet Shine, Warner Bros and BBC Children’s Television.

Our affiliation with the Television Production Guild, Bafta’s Albert initiative and The Everyman Theatre has developed our industry informed practice as well as placement and mentor opportunities.

Our Employability Advisory Panel (EAP) is instrumental in advising our degree programmes on current curriculum design and content in relation to supporting “work-ready” students. Offering a consultative forum for students to attend, it is another gateway for undergraduates to gain real one-on-one time with representatives from the creative industries.

Our ongoing interaction with creative industries ensures that the focus is not just on traditional creative arts roles. It also offers opportunities for students who are well suited to address the non-creative skills gap that the creative industries are experiencing. The semester offers smaller teaser events and trips including visits to the Royal Television Society careers fair in London, the Edinburgh Festival and Media City, as well as trips to meet production staff at Warner Bros Studio.

Personal tutor support is offered to students applying for scholarships and the Student Opportunity Fund. We also offer one-to-one coaching and group sessions delivered in partnership with organisations such as ITV, Facebook, the BBC and The Everyman Playhouse to help students prepare for entry-level job applications. Twice monthly careers surgeries are offered alongside work placement drop-in sessions to continually support students.

Unlock Your Potential

This event brings industry speakers onto campus, hosting a series of workshops, talks and activities. The event includes clusters of workshops based on different themes including personal career enhancement with representatives from the world of creative arts. A series of events under the banner the Creative Juice Bar also run throughout each semester. A programme of pop-up activities aimed at encouraging student aspiration and developing future employment routes are also available.

Graduates in creative arts subjects are usually characterised by self-confidence, high levels of presentation skills and excellent collaborative ability, so they can transfer their skills to a range of careers very effectively.
