The Role of the Manager within Health and Social Care HEA4209

Overview

Please note that this module will not run in the 2022/23 academic year.

This module explores contemporary, operational management theory and its critical application to the role of the manager in the Health and Social Care context. It normally runs once a year, starting in the February semester and is delivered as a blended module, with four taught days and two sessions delivered online.

The content of the module has been mapped against the Institute of Leadership (ILM) Level 7 Diploma in Leadership and Management and successful completion of the MSc Leadership Development (Management and Leadership PT/FT Medical Leadership) routes may lead to the opportunity of an application for a dual award and membership of a professional leadership organisation.

Who is this module for?

This module is open to practitioners working in a Health and Social Care context where the module learning outcomes can be met.

What are the key aims of the module?

This module aims to facilitate a critical review of the role of the effective manager and management in Health and Social Care.

How will I study?

This module is normally studied over four taught, day-long sessions, with a further two online sessions. The module takes 14 weeks, overall.

How will I be assessed?

There is a single assessment element to this module – a 4000-word essay undertaking a critical review of management theory and its relevance to the Health and Social Care context, the specific area of investigation is negotiated during the course of the module

On successful completion you will:

• Critically evaluate the knowledge, skills and behaviours of effective managers within Health and Social Care organisations.

• Critically appraise the manager’s role in relation to resource management.

• Critically examine the influence of the organisational context on management decision-making.
