Teaching, Learning & Simulation in the Clinical Context CPD4010
Overview
This module introduces and raises awareness of key concepts involved in teaching and facilitating learning in the clinical context and discusses how these apply to simulation based clinical education. It will provide the theoretical underpinning on which to build an understanding of learning theories and approaches to teaching, and will therefore also serve as a base on which to build in the rest of the PG. Cert. in Simulation and Clinical Learning programme.
It also commences the process of enhancing the participants’ critical reflection on their roles as teacher and learning facilitator, facilitates the articulation of their evolving personal philosophy of teaching; and commences their exploration of the appropriate use of simulation as a teaching, learning and assessment modality in the clinical context.

Who is this module for?
Any healthcare professional who is currently using simulation to learn, or to facilitate the learning of others, in the clinical workplace or associated environments and wishes to understand the major theories of learning which underpin approaches to teaching. Also, those who will use simulation in the future. Please note, participants must be working in healthcare with access to teaching opportunities at the time of module studies due to the nature of module assessments.
What are the key aims of the module?
• To help participants gain knowledge of major theories of learning and teaching and their application in the context of clinical education.
• To help participants gain a critical awareness of the role of simulation as a teaching, learning and assessment modality within the clinical context.
• To provide opportunities for participants to reflect on teaching and learning facilitation in their professional practice, with reference to potential or actual deployment of simulation as a modality for teaching, learning or assessment.
How will I study?
This module is normally studied over 3 half-day face to face sessions, plus online learning. The module overall takes one semester / 15 weeks

How will I be assessed?
There are no exams on this module. At the end of the module, you are required to submit two pieces of academic work to demonstrate your achievement of the module learning outcomes:
1. A personal philosophy of teaching statement. 2,000 words. Overall weighting: Carries 50% of module grade.
2. A critique of a session plan for simulation based learning. 2,000 words. Carries 50% of module grade.
Module tutors will give full details and preparatory exercises throughout module studies.
On successful completion you will:
Successful completion of this module enables you to demonstrate a critical understanding of major theories of learning and teaching and their application to simulation based learning in clinical education. To critically reflect on your own potential or actual deployment of simulation as a teaching modality with reference to achieving learner-centredness. And to demonstrate a critical awareness of theoretical principles underpinning the design of simulation based learning activities.
