Who is this module for?

This module can only be studied as part of the MSc Surgical Care Practice.

This module will be valuable to practitioners undertaking the MSc Surgical Care Practice and who are employed in that role by Surgical Directorates.

What are the key aims of the module?

In order to advance knowledge and ensure effective interventions in a range of surgical disciplines, working as part of a multi-disciplinary team, there is a growing realisation that organisations within health and social care delivery, operate within new paradigms and the requirement is for leaders and managers to operate effectively at every level.

As services move away from centralised control to locally-led service delivery and the drivers are to improve patient/client experience and efficiency, the requirement for suitably trained frontline leaders, able to act as change agents throughout the National Health Service (NHS), is key to success (NHS Confederation, 2007; Department of Health (DH) 2008a; DH, 2008b; Skills for Care, 2008a; DH, 2009). The changes enforced on the NHS due to the current and future economic climate, as highlighted by the DH (2008c), can only be achieved by the recognition by staff of the need to accept and lead change. In addition to this, there is a need to develop across traditional professional boundaries, improving services through collaboration with users, carers and stakeholders and colleagues (DH, 2006; DH, 2007).

Leaders and managers at all levels will have to communicate their ideas and visions to their colleagues and staff in order to gain co-operation, trust and respect. They will have to be able to challenge behaviours and existing cultures, whilst motivating and inspiring their staff to work collaboratively in highly efficient teams (NHS Confederation, 2007; Skills for Care, 2008b).

This module will, therefore, enable students to assimilate complex issues, critically reflect and appraise the roles, differences and theories behind leadership and management strategies, specifically working in the context of a surgical team. The aim will be to equip students with the skills and knowledge required to be proactive and effective leaders and managers in a multi-dimensional, complex health and social care workforce.

How will I study?

This module is normally studied over five sessions. The module overall takes 15 weeks.

What will I study?

  • National policy drivers in health and social care and implications for leaders
  • The qualities and competencies of effective leaders
  • Contemporary theories in management
  • Change and the manager
  • Theoretical frameworks and models/tools for change
  • The human dimension of change
  • The drivers and resistors to change
  • The function of leaders and managers in the change process
  • Strategies to lead people through change
  • Appreciative Inquiry Tool
  • Management and relationships within organisations
  • Management of resources – efficiency, economy and effectiveness
  • Managing self
  • Non-Technical skills.

How will I be assessed?

Discussion boards/blogs will be initiated for students to encourage peer review and support in the development of ideas/opinions and skills and will help inform the development of knowledge and skills.

The use of psychometric tools will be used to assist the students to examine their leadership style such as Belbin Team Inventory.

On successful completion you will:

  • Critically analyse theoretical frameworks of leadership and management and critically explore their application to the students own work area.
  • Demonstrate levels of critical reflection on the students own leadership style and have a conceptual understanding of how this impacts on the immediate team, organisation and patient outcomes.
  • Consider and critically evaluate and compare the characteristics and qualities of effective managers and leaders and analyse with reference to a complex change, incorporating resource management.
