Developing Practice Capability in Advanced Care HEA4241
Overview
This clinically practice-based module is designed to enable students to demonstrate capability in practice in relation to key clinical assessment and diagnostics skills. The module sits along-side the HEA4025 Clinical Assessment and Diagnostics and is designed to reflect the ability of the student to transfer knowledge and skills into the practice setting safely, whilst demonstrating capability in practice. The two modules should generally be undertaken together.
The student will be required to elicit and record an accurate clinical history, perform a clinical examination focusing on each of the major body systems, successfully interpret clinical diagnostic and develop a clinical management plan. It will enable the student to evidence their competence in practice in relation to each key system of clinical assessment and diagnostics. The evidence obtained would be transferable into any ongoing professional portfolio.

Who is this module for?
The module is accessible to students who are looking to demonstrate capability in practical skills within an advanced clinical practice setting and should be generally undertaken at the same time as HEA4025 Clinical Assessment and Diagnostics module.
What are the key aims of the module?
- To enable students to demonstrate capability in practice skills at an advanced level.
- To enable students to demonstrate critical thinking and decision-making, clinical assessment, examination and diagnostics across a range of body systems.
How will I study?
This module is normally studied over three sessions.
What will I study?
- Three face to face sessions of contact with module leader and other course members.
- Student centred learning, working with assessors in a work-based setting.
- Online discussion forums and contact with module leader to facilitate shared learning.
- Access to learning resources on Blackboard.
How will I be assessed?
The assessment for this module is a summative practice document demonstrating evidence of capability in history taking, clinical examination and development of a management plan for each of the seven key body systems. Each piece of evidence must be signed by the student and assessor in practice and capability must be demonstrated for each key system to pass the module assessment.
On successful completion you will:
- Practice, at an advanced level within your scope of practice and in compliance with the respective code of professional practice.
- Demonstrate a range of assessment methods including history taking, holistic assessment, identifying risk factors, requesting, undertaking and interpreting diagnostic tests.
- Critically consider the underpinning system specific competences including knowledge, skills and behaviours relevant to the role setting and scope.
- Demonstrate a critical application of the capabilities to system-specific competencies in an approach that is appropriate to your individual role, setting and scope, acting on professional judgement and recognising when to seek help.
