Overview
The Advancing Practice Project – Clinical Practice module is designed to enable students to consolidate and develop further their skills and knowledge gained during previous modules. More specifically this module will enable students to synthesise learning as they apply their specialist advanced knowledge to identify, lead, plan, implement, evaluate the impact and disseminate the findings of a service improvement project that will potentially promote service/treatment/practice development within their area of practice.
In accordance with the professional status and responsibility of an advanced practitioner, the module will also prepare students to share good practice with professional colleagues via written dissemination.

Who is this module for?
Students who have completed 120 credits at Level 7 as part of the MSc Advanced Practice and MSc Advanced Practice (Mental Health) programmes and are practicing healthcare professionals. Students from all professional groups can access the module, however they must ensure that they have the support of their clinical manager prior to submitting their project proposal.
What are the key aims of the module?
The project will enable you to:
- Demonstrate the ability to clearly articulate a small-scale project to advance practice within your area of work.
- Use contemporary and appropriate literature related to your selected project to develop an evidence base for your project.
- Identify and critically evaluate clinical governance, ethical and patient safety issues.
- Evaluate the impact of the project.
- Disseminate the impact and outcomes of your project.
- Develop conclusions and recommendations for practice.
How will I study?
Attendance based module. The module will be delivered using a small number of half day lectures and student seminars.

Lecture: Introduction to Module.
Lecture: Structuring your dissertation.
Lecture: Clinical governance and project planning.
Group work: students to explore potential projects and provide feedback.
Student seminars: projects will be presented to the group for formative feedback by individual students.
How will I be assessed?
A 12,000 word detailed written account of the advanced practice project providing evidence of implementation, collaboration, dissemination and evaluation, underpinned by an analysis of contemporary literature.
On successful completion you will:
- Identify the project and undertake a critical review of the literature to support your rationale.
- Critically evaluate the effectiveness of your collaboration with colleagues and agencies who assisted with the development of the project.
- Critically analyse how the project was implemented incorporating the strengths and weaknesses of the process.
- Evaluate the impact of this project and provide evidence of the outcomes achieved.

Module availability varies from year to year and will be subject to minimum student numbers being achieved. Places will be allocated on a first come first served basis. Due to the popularity of some modules it may be that the module is fully booked when your application is received. We will include your details on a waiting list and allocate you a place on the next available intake.
Please note that this module does not run on a standalone basis: it is only available as part of the MSc Advanced Clinical Practice.
