Immersing you in performance analysis, programming, and strength and conditioning, this degree equips you with the knowledge and skills to implement and manage contemporary sports coaching practices in local, national and international settings. Endorsed against the professional standards of CIMSPA, the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity, the programme offers a student-centred experience that combines academic studies with applied work experience in real-world settings. Developing skills in enterprise and entrepreneurship, you will choose from a range of contemporary and career-focused pathways that enable you to specialise in areas such as coaching community and performance sport, sports coaching in education, and coaching with children, young people and adults. The programme will appeal whether you wish to work in community or professional sports coaching, or education, across a range of audiences. You will graduate with a skillset that makes you highly employable, both within and outside the sports industry, working in roles where you can make a real difference to people’s lives.
In Depth
What will I study?
In Year 1 you will examine and undertake a range of coaching practices in sports coaching. You will also address relationships between sport, physical activity and health and examine sports policy and management. Exploring the underpinning physiology and biomechanics of sporting performance in coaching science, you will also receive a grounding in sports research skills and develop an appreciation of the essential pedagogical nature of coaching groups and individuals in various sporting practices.
Year 2 equips you with specialised and applied knowledge about a range of contemporary issues in sports coaching, providing you with practical hands-on experience in key areas of sports coaching. These include coaching pedagogy, analysing performance, athlete learning in coaching and the coaching process. You will also develop expertise in coaching diverse populations and managing health behaviour change.
In Year 3 you will gain further experience of working in coach education and hone your expertise in performance analysis and programming. Applying your knowledge to practical scenarios, you will complete a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate that your skills and understanding are closely aligned to the professional standards of the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity. You will also undertake an independent research project.
How will I study?
The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, small group seminars, practical activities, tutorials, workshops and study skills sessions to help you manage the transition to university. In addition, there will be practical work, directed independent study, supervised individual research and ICT-based learning. For each module you will have a detailed handbook that tells you what sessions are about, what to read, how you will be assessed, offers coursework guidance, and explains how module content relates to your employment, both in and beyond sports settings.
You will gain valuable work-related experience and skills throughout the programme, including with partners and other employers off campus.
How will I be assessed?
Assessments are both individual and team-based and enable you to develop your presentation skills through applied sports coaching tasks, including those undertaken in the real world and with industry partners. These tasks include the writing of essays and individual reports, coaching portfolios and practical assessments. There will be critical appraisals of learning strategies, evaluations of coaching practices, preparation of poster presentations, the planning and delivery of practical sessions, developing portfolios of evidence linked to professional standards, and undertaking a piece of original independent research.
Who will be teaching me?
You will be taught by highly enthusiastic and committed staff who have a wealth of experience working with a variety of sport and non-sport organisations. They draw upon these links to ensure you gain valuable vital practical experiences to prepare you for the world of work. Teaching staff are also involved in national and international research projects which influence the way sport is coached, developed and managed, ensuring you are given the most up-to-date knowledge relevant to your future employment.
A Great Study Environment
All courses in the Department of Sport and Physical Activity place a strong emphasis on practical work, underpinned by outstanding facilities including dedicated biochemistry, biomechanics, performance analysis, physiology and psychology laboratories.
The performance analysis laboratory provides access to industry-standard software and audio-visual equipment for the analysis of athletic and coaching performance, while the biochemistry laboratory enables you to collect and accurately analyse a wide range of metabolites, using the latest technology, to determine the physiological responses of athletes and others, to a variety of exercise stresses such as running, cycling and rowing.
There is a dedicated sports therapy clinic, providing a clinical learning environment in which to gain practical experience, as well as a functional rehabilitation centre where bespoke rehabilitation programmes for individuals or small groups can be implemented.
Additional learning resources include high quality eye-tracking systems in a specialist vision analysis laboratory where you can measure hand-eye coordination, ocular-motor control, reaction times, cognition and other mechanisms associated with visual perception. Cutting edge musculoskeletal assessment tools combine with a dedicated strength and conditioning area in our MSk laboratory where you can assess athletes and implement (p)rehabilitation programmes. Isokinetic dynamometry, electromyography and dynamic balance assessment can all be conducted with immediate transfer to exercise prescription.
In the Sleep, Exercise and Performance laboratory, you can measure the responses of individuals to sleep, sleep deprivation and changes in the circadian rhythms of a variety of biological processes. This helps to determine the best time to exercise or when individuals need to sleep and recover.
Complementing the impressive academic facilities, there are £30 million of sport and leisure facilities across 60 acres on campus, including top-of-the-range 3G football and rugby pitches, hockey pitches, tennis courts, a competition-standard athletics track and an athletics field. The University sports centre boasts a 25-metre swimming pool, double sports hall for badminton, basketball, netball and squash, a 100-station fitness suite, aerobics studio and a health suite with sauna and steam rooms.
